Boston Natural History Museums (BNHM)

Berkeley Natural History Museums (BNHM) is a nationally recognized leader in Biodiversity Informatics (BDI). Conceptually, by taking these collections of physical specimens and related documentation out of the cases, digitizing them, and putting them on the Web, BNHM has transformed the information contained in the collections from the parochial to the universal. The vast store of data held by BNHM is progressing toward being available to all potential users: academic, policy, citizen science.

Primary aims of BNHM informatics:

Long-term sustainability of the hardware, databases and web interfaces that underpin management and sharing of museum-related biodiversity information
Increased capacity for sharing unique biodiversity information and knowledge developed through BNHM research programs
Improved IT connectivity and data management for Berkeley Field stations, leading to greater synergy between ecology and evolution/systematics research programs
Increased understanding of BNHM BDI resources by our Faculty, staff and students and to promote creative development of these within BNHM and in collaboration with other groups on campus (eg. EECS, SIMS etc.) and in the broader Bay Area IT community
Increased competitiveness for extramural (eg. NSF, Foundations) support of Biodiversity Science and Informatics
